(Castagneto Carducci - Livorno)
The Carducci House in Castagneto was to host the famous Nobel prize poet in two different times. The first one in 1848 when his family, fleeing from Bolgheri, lived in this house for about a year and a half. Giosue’s father was a doctor and also a revolutionary man, being a fervid republican against monarchy and against Roman Catholic church he caused great trouble to himself and his family. Doctor Michele Carducci and his family where sent away from Bolgheri through ”rifle shots” intimidatingly fired towards their windows home during a night in May 1848. For Doctor Michele life in Castagneto was featured by times of lively tensions and eager passions, reason being 1848 was the revolution year for people in Castagneto; later they obtained permission to use lands, timber and feedom for fishing and hunting in Della Gherardesca noble family’s estate. The second time in this house refers to his fame: Giosuè Carducci often returned to his adolescent home as renown poet. In february 1907 the 16th, on the poet’s death, Castagneto Marittimo with immediate municipal resolution, in his honour, became today’s Castagneto Carducci. The City Council had also a desire for acquiring the Carducci House as Museum but there was an obstacle: the property owner, Antonietta Espinassi Moratti, was only 12. The dream came true in June 1992 thanks to her daughter, Maria Bianca Cancellieri. Giosuè Carducci was born in Valdicastello on July 1835 the 27th and died in Bologna on February 1907 the 16th, in 1906 he was the first italian to receive the Nobel prize for literature.
